Wreckage of GSDF helicopter recovered from waters in Okinawa

A crashed Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force helicopter was recovered from waters in the southern prefecture of Okinawa before noon on Tuesday.

The helicopter disappeared from radar near Miyakojima Island on April 6. It was carrying a crew of 10.

The debris of the helicopter, found at the depth of 106 meters, was raised onto the deck of one of the two private salvage ships involved in the work at about 11:45 a.m. A large net was used to lift the wreckage.

The GSDF plans to recover the chopper's flight recorder and investigate what caused the accident.

Six of the 10 people on board have been confirmed dead. The GSDF continues to search for those still listed as missing.
