With further extension, Eddie Jones extends England deal to 2021

At least until 2021, Eddie Jones is poised to continue as England’s head coach even if he fail to achieve his side’s target at the World Cup in Japan this year. Bill Sweeney, the Rugby Football Union’s new chief executive has revealed that Jones could be in charge for the 2023 World Cup in France.

It represents Jones’s another shift in RFU policy after his contract was extended through 2021 by Sweeney’s predecessor in January 2018, but England fail to reach the semi-finals in Japan. Sweeney expects Jones to stay, however, there would still be a review if England flop in Japan.

Furthermore, Sweeney said that Eddie is contracted to 2021 and he is very committed to stay until ’21. If Jones and Mitchell stay until the 2023 tournament, it is still possible. The focus now is on the world cup and make sure to that they get the plans in place post-World Cup. Sweeney and Eddie have started conversations around what will the coaching team be coming from Japan.

Brown wanted to identify Jones’s successor before this year’s World Cup. Brown lasted just over a year, but, with Sweeney, who brought in to stem the union’s financial losses claiming it would have been a distraction if they make plans before this year’s World Cup.
