Wim Wenders' 'Perfect Days' starring Japanese actor wows audience at Cannes

German director Wim Wenders' film "Perfect Days" has received a standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival in France. The movie stars Japanese actor Yakusho Koji.

The film is in this year's competition category. It was screened in the French resort city on Thursday, after Wenders, Yakusho, and his fellow actors appeared on the red carpet.

The story is set in Shibuya, Tokyo. The main character, played by Yakusho, makes a living cleaning public toilets.

The audience gave the film a standing ovation when it ended.

Yakusho told Japanese media outlets that he was moved by the warm applause. He also said he was happy that the Cannes festivalgoers, many of whom are discerning judges of movies, watched his film.

An American woman in the audience praised the film. She said it makes people realize that life is rich by highlighting the happiness that little things in everyday life can bring.

She also said she was impressed by the subtle expressions on the main character's face and the beautiful images in the film.

Japanese director Koreeda Hirokazu's "Kaibutsu" or "Monster" is among the movies in contention for the top prize.

The awards will be announced on Saturday.
