WHO, Japan to discuss anti-virus methods for Games
The World Health Organization says it will discuss anti-coronavirus measures for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics with Japanese authorities and the International Olympic Committee this week.
Tokyo Games officials on Monday decided to allow up to 10,000 domestic spectators at Olympic events, provided each venue does not exceed 50 percent capacity.
At a regular news conference, Michael Ryan, who heads the WHO's Health Emergencies Programme, said infection rates in Japan have fallen consistently over the last couple of weeks.
He emphasized that the rates in Japan are lower than in other countries where large events are already taking place.
Ryan said the WHO would meet with the Tokyo organizing committee, the Japanese government and the IOC to consider a variety of measures, including diagnosis, screening and surveillance methods.
