WHO declares global emergency for coronavirus

On Thursday, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the novel coronavirus in Wuhan as a global emergency after the virus had spread to more than a dozen countries and a spike in the number of cases more than tenfold in a week.

The global emergency status means that the coronavirus outbreak is an extraordinary event that poses a threat to other countries; hence, the world needs to overcome it together.

The coronavirus case was first reported by China in late December before breaking out at Huanan Fish Market in Wuhan, Hubei Province, Central China. Since then, China had reported more than 7,800 cases and 170 deaths. Moreover, 18 other countries also reported the novel coronavirus from Wuhan.

The Director-General of WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that it is not China, but how the virus had spread across the world. The greatest concern is that the virus would spread to countries with low health systems that are ill-prepared to deal with the novel coronavirus.

WHO still believes that China – as the second-biggest economy in the world - will be able to contain the virus.

Nonetheless, the global emergency status often hails bad luck to one country’s trade and tourism since the nervous governments would impose temporary travel and trade ban on the infected country. WHO said that it does not suggest countries to limit their travel and trade to China.
