Whirlpool is to issue 800,000 recall of unmodified tumble dryers

The Office for Product Safety and Standards has announced to recall of unmodified tumble dryers issued by Whirlpool. The company serves a recall notice informed by the OPSS last month. Customers with an unmodified tumble dryers will get a replacement for a new machine and will be delivered and installed with zero cost.

The company had agreed to publicize the recall as there would be no charges for replacement, delivery and installation, and would provide continuous progress reports to the regulator. Around 800,000 units could be affected and this is may be far higher than what Whirlpool expected.

The consumers’ minister, Kelly Tolhurst said that the UK has the strongest consumer protection laws in the world. She wants to reassure the consumers that the ministry is doing their best to ensure consumer’s safety. As for the Whirlpool case, Tolhurst will make sure that all consumers have their tumble dryer replaced.

Around 54 fires had been logged in its tumble dryers in recent years and three of the models had already been updated. Furthermore, Whirlpool stated that 1.7m products have been modified. One of the consumers, Jemma Spurr was asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement when her dryer caught fire. She then received an apology from Whirlpool’s communications chief, eff Noel.
