We promise 5G will be available before 2024: Government

Indonesian Government targeted pre-2025 as the deadline to commercialize the technology of the 5G network. It will be done before the capital transfer from Java to Kalimantan. Is not that a bit late?

Answering the question of whether the 5G network will be implemented in the new capital, the Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Johnny G. Plate, said that Indonesia is actually ready since the trial is on progress. Johnny said that before commercial use, he hoped that the 5G network could be implemented in the manufacturing sector.

Regarding the implementation of the 5G network in the new capital, Johnny said that it could be used to support the Indonesian government going digital.

Indonesian network providers had continuously held trials on 5G networks, ranging from the industrial sector to autonomous vehicles. Meanwhile, the Indonesian government is still scrutinizing the regulations and frequencies from low band to high band.

Johnny admitted that he had no idea which technology to use since his Ministry is still considering the economic benefit and the ecosystem.

Comparing Indonesia to its neighbor, Vietnam, the archipelagic country is a bit lagging behind. The Vietnamese government was already committed to commercializing the successor of the 4G network in 2020.

Even, Vietnam aims to sell its own smartphone, VSmart by Vingroup JSC. Vingroup JSC will build its plant in Hanoi and start selling its smartphone to the United States (U.S) and Europe in the upcoming April.
