Vegan Burger at KFC!?

Has vegan lifestyle become a trend or a fad? The point is, with the lifestyle rises among the hipsters and youths, many restaurants go extra miles to attract them to spend their money at their business. Even if they had to run away from their visions and missions.

KFC chain in UK, for example, recently stated that they wanted to try out a new menu dedicated for the “lovely” vegans out there who just hate meat. How? KFC announced the all new vegan burger.

Colonel Sanders franchise said that the burger would test the water for 4 weeks starting from 17 June before deciding whether they will put it as a permanent menu or it will be called off.

The vegan menu is set to be sold in 20 KFC restaurants across London, Bristol, and Midlands.

They called the menu “The Imposter”, and it is a burger. Funny, since the name is a nod to how the burger tries to look appealing as the ordinary juicy beef burgers.

“The Imposter” looks like an ordinary burger. But, instead of beef patty, they replaced it with Quorn. Add lettuce and “vegan” mayo, voila, you got yourself “The Imposter”. KFC also did not forget to add their signature herb in the burger.

Since the menu is beef-free, of course PETA applauded this menu as “innovation”, and it also praised KFC for their bravery in creating a vegan-friendly menu.

Head of KFC’s food innovation in UK and Ireland, Victoria Robertson, hailed “The Imposter” as the temptation from KFC – as meat-selling chain – the vegans just cannot resist. She even went as far as claiming that she and her team had been perfecting the burger for years, and the deceased Colonel Harland Sanders “would be proud”.

Quorn itself is a meat substitution well known in UK, owned by Philippines-based Monde-Nissin Corporation. Instead of meat, it is made of mushrooms and fermented. Mostly, the product’s taste is bound by egg albumen.

Specially made for the vegans, Quorn used potato albumen to bind the taste so that it can imitate the meaty taste.

Tony Davison, head of Quorn’s food service and QSR, was both baffled and proud by how Quorn could be included into KFC’s menu. He stated that the Quorn in “The Imposter” served justice to the Colonel Sanders’ recipe.

Well, what do you think of the menu? Aside from being healthy, will the menu ever replace the juicy taste of beef? Reserve your opinion, and grab one.
