Vatican appoints an Indonesian cardinal

Indonesian Catholics can be proud once more. Pope Francis appointed 13 cardinals on a consistorium held on the upcoming 5 October, adding the number from 118 to 128. One of which is the Archbishop of Jakarta, Monsignor Ignatius Suharyo Hardjoatmodjo. Mgr. Suharyo succeeded Julius Cardinal Darmaatmadja, who resigned from the position in 2010, as the Archbishop of Jakarta.

Many congratulations came from several instances. The Council of Churches in Indonesia (PGI) also addressed its felicitation for Mgr. Suharyo for being elected as one of the Cardinals in the Vatican. The felicitation was addressed by PGI’s General Secretary, Gomar Gultom.

“PGI congratulates Mgr. Suharyo for his appointment as one of 13 cardinals by Pope Francis. Proficiat,” stated Gultom on behalf of PGI.

Gomar recalled Suharyo as an Archbishop who serve and protect Catholics in Indonesia relentlessly. He added that Suharyo adheres to modesty as a way of life, which has been the foundation for his service. Not only religion but also Suharyo pays delicate attention to education.

Furthermore, the appointment of Mgr. Suharyo as one of the Cardinals in the Vatican is also seen as a great action from the Vatican toward Indonesia. Gultom added that by the appointment, PGI also hopes that the bilateral relations between Indonesia and the Vatican will always be preserved.

About the whereabouts of the Archbishop, the Public Relation of Archbishop of Jakarta, Susyana Suwadie, stated that Mgr. Suharyo is still in Indonesia and is going to the Vatican a day before the consistorium starts. Archbishop of Jakarta also stated its gratitude that the Vatican had trusted Catholic Churches of Indonesia by the appointment of Mgr. Suharyo as one of the 13 cardinals.
