US sends troops to Saudi Arabia

On Friday (20/9), the President of the United States (US), Donald Trump, granted the permission to dispatch US troops to assist Saudi Arabia after the assault to Arabia’s biggest oil facility in Abqaiq, Saudi Aramco, an assault that rattled the global oil reserve.

Announced by the U.S. Defense Secretary, Mark Esper, and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen Joseph Dunford Jr, the Pentagon stated that the dispatch was not an offensive measure, but to bolster Saudi Arabia’s defense in case there would be another assault. Not giving any number, Gen. Dunford stated that the dispatch was “moderate”, not climbing to thousands.

The US looks forward to sending more military equipment faster to the kingdom to bolster its defense. The Defense Secretary stated that to avenge Saudi through retaliatory action was not in the US way.

The US blamed Iran for the attack, claiming the evidence that the assault came from the southern part of Iran. Instead of assaulting them back, the US imposed more economic sanctions on Tehran. Trump referred to the military restraint as “strength” and the sanction as “highest level”.

Iran, on the other hand, denied any involvement in the attack. However, Yemen’s Houthi movement, who is often backed up by Iran, claimed that the attack was theirs. President of Iran, Hassan Rouhani, said that the attack was “reciprocal” from the Yemeni people.
