US sends munitions seized from Iran to Ukraine
The US Central Command announced on Wednesday that about 1.1 million rounds had been transferred to Ukraine. It said the munitions were seized in December last year when they were being transferred from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to Yemen's anti-government forces in violation of a UN Security Council resolution. The announcement comes after the US Congress passed a spending bill to avert a government shutdown last Saturday.
The stopgap funding measures did not include the 24 billion dollars in aid for Ukraine, which the Biden administration had requested. On Tuesday, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was ousted from the post. There are concerns that military assistance to Kyiv could be affected if it takes time for the House to select a new speaker and budget debates are delayed.
