US: Russian defense chief visited N.Korea to seek military support
Shoigu led a Russian delegation to the North to mark the 70th anniversary of the Korean War armistice. He held separate talks with his North Korean counterpart Kang Sun Nam and the country's leader, Kim Jong Un. Speaking to reporters in Washington on Thursday, White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said Russia is seeking to increase military cooperation with North Korea through such means as acquiring artillery munitions from Pyongyang. Kirby said the US remains concerned that North Korea continues to contemplate providing military support to Russia's military operations against Ukraine. He added that any arms deal between North Korea and Russia would directly violate a series of UN Security Council resolutions. Kirby said that as a result of being affected by the sanctions and export controls imposed by the West, Russia is reaching out to countries like North Korea and Iran to get support for the war. He said the US is going to continue to identify, expose and counter Russian efforts to get ammunition from North Korea, and any other state that might be prepared to support its war in Ukraine.
