US Peace Plan: Palestinians Must Have A State, Jordan’s King Says

King Abdullah of Jordan told White House Senior Advisor Jared Kushner during his trip on Wednesday (5/29) to the country that lasting peace in the Middle East can only be realized with the creation of a state for Palestinians and East Jerusalem as the capital.

Kushner is leading the US delegation to the Middle East this week, partly to bolster support for the Bahrain conference in a late June, where he is going to unveil the first part of the US long-awaited Palestinian-Israeli peace plan.

According to the palace statement, the King told Kushner that Israel has to withdraw from the West Bank that captured in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. He was also said to have been deeply concerned about the plan that could cancel out the two-state solution backed by the United Nations and most countries around the world.

In the two-state solution, Palestinians want to establish a state in all the territory Israel captured in the war. These include the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip.

Despite touting the peace plan as the ‘deal of the century’, Trump’s administration has been boycotted by the Palestinians since it recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. They have also anticipated if the plan falls far short of their demands.

Kushner’s visit staged a small protest by dozens of Jordanians on Tuesday night near the US Embassy in Amman. They chanted that the deal of the century will not pass.
