US & Mexico Finally Got Their Deal

From the result of the meeting on Friday (7/6) between US and Mexico, both of the countries eventually finalized a deal that US would suspend any tariff raise to the Mexicans. The deal covers immigration field. At the very least, Mexico avoids any heated argument with US.

The details of the deal would be released later, according to US State Department.

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has been slapping tariff raise for exported US goods, the latest victim being China whose tariff was raised from 10% to 25%. Mexico was about to be the next victim. That was until both of the countries finalized a deal that seems to be a win-win solution for the countries.

Through his tweet, Trump clarified that the tariff raise for the North American country. In exchange, Mexico had to control their immigration wave that has been flooding US for years.

Trump’s threat was not without any foundation. The US was flooded by approximately 132,000 Mexican immigrants in May, and these immigrants were illegal. The monthly figure alone exceeds any monthly figure since 2006.

Dubbing this incident as an “invasion”, Trump stated that if the immigration wave will not be controlled, Trump would impose 25% tariff hike over Mexico.

Nonetheless, Mexico will not come quiet to US’ demand. Following the Chinese’s retaliation, Mexico – should the tariff raise ever happen – will also impose tariff over their exported goods. If the condition turns likewise, America is facing 2 toughest opponents in terms of import: China and Mexico.

During the talks, Mexico stated that they would deploy 6,000 security troops at their southern border, Guatemala, to intercept any illegal immigrants who want to pass through without any document. Both countries are still trying to formulate a greater, longer solution to tackle the immigration flood.

While making America great again, Trump has to face the fact that raising tariff against some countries would only backfire to his own people. But, would Trump be threatening Mexico even further? We will see later.
