US: Forget Huawei, Be Proud of Our Own

It is a pride of a nation, and one of which is to be proud of its own products. In an exclusive interview between EURACTIV journalist, Alexandra Brzozowski, and US envoy to European Union (EU), Gordon Sondland, US dropped truth bombs about how Huawei ban would affect US and EU.

Sondland stated that US is not the only protectionist country in the world, despite having different trade approach compared to US. As matter of fact, EU is pretty much as protectionist as US. He hoped that by November, EU would take step on the same path as US in embracing the western technology, instead of depending on Huawei.

By complying to the ban, Sondland referred to Huawei as the uniting factor between US and EU. He added that by the rapid development of 5G network, everything is connected to each other. In other words, Sondland asserted that he did now want to risk this connection to run through a weak, vulnerable connection.

The vulnerable connection might have been a nod to Huawei, since they have developed their own OS, HongMeng, which seems to be more vulnerable to hackers and crackers than Google’s Android OS.

In addition, by complying to the ban, Sondland hoped that US and EU would walk hand in hand to develop together what they referred to as “Western Telecom” industry. Sondland added that all companies of the world would comply to the ban, not only US and EU.

However, he stated uncertainty whether Huawei would comply to the ban, adding the statement of hope that Huawei would someday follow the demand of US, so that the ban might be lifted off of it.

In the next session of the interview, both discussed about US and EU comments regarding Boeing and their trade relations.
