UNSC to hold open meeting on N.Korea's human rights situation
The UN Security Council is expected this month to hold its first open meeting on North Korea's human rights situation since 2017.
At a joint news conference on Thursday, Japanese Ambassador to the UN Ishikane Kimihiro and his US and South Korean counterparts announced they have requested that the meeting be held next Thursday.
US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield chairs the council this month. She said the Security Council must address the horrors, abuses and crimes that the North Korean regime is perpetrating against its own people as well as the people of Japan and South Korea.
The diplomats said the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights is expected to report on the human rights situation in North Korea.
China and Russia, both permanent members of the council, have been opposing the open meeting and are expected to protest the move again. Holding an open meeting requires support from at least nine of the 15 council members.
