UN Probe: Foreign Companies contribute to Rohingya Crisis

On Monday, the United Nations (UN) Fact-Finding Mission revealed its probe’s report on Rohingya humanitarian crisis in Rakhine State, Myanmar. According to the mission, many foreign companies from Asia and Africa are playing part in the crisis.

On the report’s page 111, 15 foreign companies reportedly had established partnership while the rest 44 firms had set up commercial links with Myanmar Economic Corporation (MEC) and Myanmar Economic Holdings Limited (MEHL) - two military-linked corporations.

The partnership between foreign companies and the two Myanmar’s conglomerates could boost the financial capacity of Tatmadaw (armed forces of Myanmar). The revenue made by business alliances will help the armed forces to drive their military operations, according to the mission.

The mission chairman and Indonesia’s former attorney general, Marzuki Darusman said there was an undoubted connection between business and inhumanity in three states of Myanmar – Rakhine, Kachan, and Sachin.

The UN’s mission advised companies, investors, and consumers to stay away from doing business affiliated with the two’s Myanmar’s military-linked companies.

Foreign corporations that have a connection with Tatmadaw-linked firms are originally from Southeast Asian countries such as Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines. The other Asian’s companies are China, Japan, India, South Korea Taiwan-China, Hong Kong-China. In addition to Belgium, France, Switzerland, Russia, and Ukraine.

The humanitarian crisis of Rohingya has become a global topic where many human right activists have condemned Myanmar’s government regarding the issue.

Indonesia as one of the ASEAN members has a big role to support peace in the region. Earlier at the 33rd ASEAN Summit in Singapore, President of Indonesia Joko Widodo or known as Jokowi had called for ASEAN members to discuss over Rohingya.

President Jokowi urged ASEAN members to show commitment to maintaining the region’s peace. If the Rohingya’s issue were still unsolved, it could bring bad impacts to the region in general, according to the president.

ASEAN through its Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance (AHA Centre) is expected can assist in finding a solution to the crisis.
