Uber Team Up With Start-Up SUN Mobility to Bring Electric Auto-rickshaws in India

In the coming months, India will welcome electric auto-rickshaws from Uber Technologies. One great momentum as the Indian policymakers is pushing toward the use of cleaner fuel.

India is known as the home of some of the most polluted cities in the world, including popular cities like the capital New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Jaipur, and Chennai. The majority of Indians usually travel by rickshaws than personal cars.

Therefore, the switch to electric auto-rickshaws would not only help to cut the emissions but also will help to cut the country’s fuel import costs.

The ride-hailing company said on Wednesday (7/24) that to bring the electric three-wheelers, it will tie up a partnership with a local start-up SUN Mobility. Under the pact, SUN Mobility will offer a service of charged swappable batteries to fleet owners and Uber’s driver-partners.

The start-up said it will benefit the fleet owners and driver-partners as they can buy vehicles without the battery to save money on initial acquisition costs.

SUN already tested its current battery model and supplying batteries for 500 auto-rickshaws to SmartE, another local start-up that runs electric auto-rickshaws. Sun also makes swappable batteries for buses.

Co-Founder and Vice-Chairman of SUN Mobility, Maini, said that the partnership with Uber will transform the way people commute with the use of wide electric vehicle landscape at scale.

Uber doesn’t disclose how many cities it would target and a number of auto-rickshaws that would be deployed across India.
