U.S unwilling to join global effort in finding COVID-19 vaccine

On Tuesday, the President of the United States (U.S), Donald Trump, said that the country would not join the international effort to develop a vaccine for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemics. Since the U.S had withdrawn from the World Health Organization (WHO) in July, Trump stated that it will not be constrained anymore. The POTUS stated that the current WHO listens too much to China and needs to change.

The decision was announced by the White House spokesperson, Judd Deere. The U.S insists that it will strive alone and pass vaccines that pass its Food & Drug Administration (FDA) standard in order to restore lives in the U.S.

More than 150 countries have joined the COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access Facility (COVAX). Backed by WHO, COVAX allows countries to recover quickly from COVID-19. Even, individual vaccine makers are benefited from COVAX since the vaccines they produce will be stored as back-ups for the worst-case scenario.

Not all Americans agreed with Trump. Some viewed the decision as reckless and will only prolong the U.S’ battle against the worldwide pandemics. By not joining COVAX, they said that it would risk the U.S more by not getting access to the vaccines. Moreover, the U.S is no longer the leader in the battle against COVID-19 after its withdrawal from the WHO; hence, the U.S seems to isolate itself from a certain measure against COVID-19.
