Typhoon in Kanto, 1 dead and at least 40 injured

Halting train service and delaying more than a hundred flights, Typhoon Faxai, hit the Kanto region. Speeding up to 216 km/h, Faxai caused a landslide in Chiba, east of Tokyo.

The typhoon was a result of the same natural disaster, Typhoon Lingling, that hit the Korean Peninsula, especially North Korea, which took eight lives.

The typhoon wreaked havoc at Tokyo bay before sweeping the capital. It is one of the strongest typhoons to hit Tokyo in recent years. The typhoon affected Tokyo, Chiba, Kanagawa, Ibaraki and Shizuoka prefectures.

In Setagaya Ward, Tokyo, the typhoon took the life of an elderly woman. The fierce wind slammed her to the wall, killing her instantly. While more than 40 people were injured in Chiba, Kanagawa, Ibaraki, and Shizuoka prefectures.

About 340,000 people received a non-mandatory evacuation order and 2,000 people took refuge under the shelter provided for the order. The typhoon also left 910,000 houses in the capital without electricity.

In Shizuoka, more than 10 houses were damaged with fallen trees and branches, also cars were flipped on their sides. About eight surfers were rescued from drowning due to the typhoon and two were hospitalized. Fortunately, none of these surfers suffered severe injury.

Typhoon Faxai pummeled Tokyo as the country is about to hold one of the most prestigious sporting events in the world, 2019 Rugby World Cup, from 20 September – 2 November. Due to the typhoon, the Australian rugby team’s flight to Japan had to be delayed. French team barely made it to their training ground near Mt. Fuji.

Currently, the typhoon had left for Pacific in the morning. However, this does not mean that Japan could let its guard down a bit. Although the damage in the capital was light compared to its surrounding prefectures, many people found it difficult to commute to work as the train station was halted by the typhoon.
