Twitter bans political ads on its platform

Tackling misinformation spread by the politicians for their own gain, Twitter, on Wednesday, announced that it would take action to stop receiving any political advertisements globally on its platform.

As revealed by the CEO of Twitter in his tweets, Jack Dorsey, referred to the internet political ads as “powerful and effective”. However, due to the misinformation, Dorsey stated that it might affect the votes which in turn, will affect the lives of millions of people.

Dorsey further tweeted that the policy, which will run into effect starting 22 November, will ban any political ads from any candidate from all over the world. Further information about the policy will be unveiled on 15 November.

The move came just a few days after the CEO and founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, had to defend his company from the allegation of spreading misleading political ads. Not only the Democrats but the demand also came from Facebook’s employees for the social media company to control the misleading political ads.

Unlike Twitter, Facebook allows “not-fact-checking” political ads and speech. In the name of free speech and democracy, Zuckerberg said that everyone deserves to raise their “voice”, and banning political ads will only benefit the incumbent.

During his speech in Washington, Zuckerberg reasoned that Facebook cannot block all political ads because it does not know where to “draw the lines”.

Dorsey bashed Zuckerberg’s statement by saying that many social movements thrive without having to rely on political ads.

Many Twitter users reacted to the announcement positively. They all agreed that until social media companies regulate standards to tackle misinformation, banning political ads from not only the United States (U.S) is a good idea.

However, for some, they bashed Twitter for the move. Trump supporters said that the move was aimed to maim the conservatives.
