Trump to Meet Emperor Naruhito

TOKYO - The President of the United States (POTUS), Donald Trump is expected to meet Naruhito on 27 May. Since the enthronement of Emperor Naruhito on 1 May, Donald Trump is going to be the first foreign leader to meet the Emperor.

Emperor Naruhito ascended to the Chrysanthemum Throne on 1 May to be the 126th Emperor of Japan after the abdication his father, Emperor Emeritus Akihito on 1 May, which also marked the beginning of the new era, Reiwa Era. Just yesterday (15/5), he and Japan’s PM, Shinzo Abe, discussed for the first time on the national agenda for Japan.

Boarding the Air Force One, special plane for the POTUS, Trump’s visitation is going to be held from 25 May to 28 May.

After the arrival, Trump is going to meet Abe in a friendly golf match in Chiba Prefecture. The golf match between the two will mark the fifth time they are playing together. After the golf, Trump is invited to watch the grand final of Summer Grand Sumo Tournament at Ryogoku Kokugikan arena, Tokyo. This invitation to Sumo match is special, since Trump will not only watch the tournament, but also he is going to be the one who award the trophy to the Sumo champion.

The following day, Trump is going to meet the main symbol of Japan, Emperor Naruhito and His Empress Masako Owada. After the meeting with the Emperor, Trump is going to be accompanied once more by Shinzo Abe for the 11th summit talks at the State Guesthouse in Motoakasaka, Tokyo.

First and the foremost agenda of the summit is to discuss about the abduction issue by North Korea toward Japanese family in 1970s-1980s as the main focus of Shinzo Abe’s program, and they might discuss about the trade talks and the missile fired by North Korea just last week.

On the last day of visitation, Trump is going to Yokosuka Military Base in Kanagawa Prefecture.
