Train collides with truck in Yokohama, at least 1 dead & 34 injured

On Thursday at 11.40 a.m local time, a commuter train from Keikyu Corp - bringing about 500 passengers - collided with a truck and got derailed. The truck, carrying lots of citrus fruit, got caught in the railway before colliding with the train.

The collision caused three of eight carriages of the commuter train to derail. The lead carriage was badly derailed. The truck was severely mangled, with its boxes of fruit scattered all around the scene.

The incident happened in Yokohama, at a crossing on the Keikyu Line between Kanagawa-Shimmachi and Nakakido stations.

At that time, the train was en route to Tokyo when the conductor of the train saw the truck which got stuck on the railway. He honked and hit the brake to no avail and did not make it in time to make the stop. Black smoke and fire immediately emerged from the truck.

After evacuating the victims of the collision, it was found that an old man, in his 60s, died due to the collision. The old man was assumed to be the driver of the citrus truck. Evacuated from beneath the debris, the truck driver passed away from the life-threatening wounds having been brought to the hospital.

A woman in her 20s was severely injured, three passengers suffered less severe injuries, and the others suffered minor injuries.

The police and rescue teams could not figure out the cause of the collision. However, the Ministry of Transport is also involved in investigating the cause of the collision. Due to the incident, Keikyu Kawasaki and Kamiooka stations halted their service temporarily.
