Toyota and Subaru agree to release Gen 2 of 86 and BRZ

On Monday, Toyota and Subaru announced a new deal to remake its twin brothers: Toyota GT86 and Subaru BRZ. In 2005, Toyota signed a cooperation agreement with Subaru which resulted in the birth of rear-wheel-drive GT86 and BRZ. It seems like both companies did not forget the two.

Also, Toyota also increased his shares ownership in Subaru by 3% to 20%, from previously 17%. Subaru also increased its ownership by the same amount to how much Toyota had spent.

In the new deal, Toyota would continue cooperating with Subaru in making not only sports car but also battery electric vehicle (BEV) in 2021 as the successor of GT86 and BRZ. While taking up the challenge to produce a connected, autonomous, shared, and electric (CASE) vehicle, both automotive giants want to preserve the driving enjoyment.

While the design and specifications remain veiled, however, speculations had it that the next generation of the two will use either Subaru’s platform or to use the Toyota New Global Architecture platform. That was because Subaru’s Boxer Engine, the engine which current GT86 and BRZ run on, is only applicable to Subaru-owned chassis.

Subaru is benefited from Toyota’s electrification tech, and Toyota is likewise benefited from Subaru’s all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. Subaru planned to expand the usage of Toyota’s hybrid driveline into its models.

Subaru trusts Toyota when it comes to hybrid technology, but for now, the only Subaru’s model that adapts hybrid technology is Crosstrek Hybrid, exclusive for the North America region.
