The world's most expensive wine by Hungary
Hungarian wine, Royal Tokaji's Essencia, is sold at US$40,000, making the wine the most expensive in the world. Essencia is available for a limited quantity of 20 bottles. The 1.5-liter wine bottle is designed by the Hungarian artist, James Carcass.Royal Tokaji's Essencia is served on a spoon. But, not your ordinary spoon, it is crystal. The spoon serving is due to the viscosity and all the sugary taste the wine contains. Therefore, a spoonful is the right amount. The taste is said to go right to your cerebrum; it overwhelms your taste buds with deliciousness and sugar.
In 2008, about 18 bottles of Essencia were produced. The wine was made using Essencia grape cultivated in the Carpathian’s foothills, also known as the oldest wine producer in the world.
Hungary has vineyard records dating back to as far as the 5th century. However, its popularity as a legendary winemaker was stained by a plague that ravaged the land in the 1800s. Hungarian winery then regained its ground back in the late 1980s.
To produce Essencia, good weather is required. One bottle of Royal Tokaji's Essencia needs approximately 20kg grape, raisined until it becomes berries to be served in a 37.4cm wine bottle that contains only three percent of alcohol. The fermentation process also takes a lengthy time.
The manager of Royal Tokaji Winery, Zoltan Kovacs, said that the fermentation of Essencia wine takes three to ten years to be “perfect”. Tokaji Essencia contains a rather unusual proof, four percent.
