The U.S prepares evacuation measures as Wuhan's outbreak worsens

With the rise of the death toll due to the novel coronavirus-related pneumonia in Wuhan to 56 deaths, the United States (U.S) Consulate in Wuhan announced on Sunday that it will evacuate its personnel and private citizens on a chartered flight.

Meanwhile, the U.S Embassy in Beijing warned that there would be a limited capacity to evacuate U.S citizens on next Tuesday’s direct flight from Wuhan to San Francisco. People with greater risk from coronavirus are prioritized.

Not only the U.S but also the French Consulate is said to evacuate its nationals from Wuhan, saying that it was arranging bus service to pick the nationals up. One of the prominent French automakers, PSA Group, said that it would evacuate its employees and workers from Wuhan, quarantine them, and bring them back home.

France’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also struggled to bring back its citizens from Wuhan. But, regarding what method, the Ministry did not elaborate further.

President of China, Xi Jinping, referred to the situation as “grave” as the Chinese government is struggling to restrict travels and gatherings while rushing medical teams and supplies to Wuhan. Currently, Wuhan remains locked down. Per Sunday, there were 15 deaths and 688 cases with a total of 1,975 infections.

Celebrating Lunar New Year, Chinese tourists are traveling to and fro from China to other parts of the world. As a result, the outbreak spread. Canada announced the first patient of the novel coronavirus, a 50-year-old man having traveled from Wuhan – Guangzhou – Toronto.

Small numbers of cases had also touched the ASEAN and Australia regions.
