The U.K announces full lockdown

After experiencing a surge in the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) cases, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (U.K), Boris Johnson, announced full lockdown over the U.K on Monday evening. The restriction only allows the British to go out for consumption, medicine, or essential works.

The number of COVID-19 cases in the U.K is two weeks closer to Italy’s outbreak level.

Speaking from his Downing Street residence, Johnson stated a simple message: “YOU MUST STAY AT HOME.” The PM only allows British people to go outside to do the following things:
1. Shopping for basic necessities,
2. One form of exercise daily,
3. Medical needs or assist a vulnerable person, and
4. Traveling to essential work that cannot be done from home.

Johnson also would close all unnecessary shops, playgrounds, libraries, and religious sites, places deemed to be the center of mass gatherings. To ensure the restriction is effective, the PM also ban mass gatherings under the following categories:
1. More than two people in public,
2. Weddings, baptisms, and other religious ceremonies, excluding funerals.

Moreover, fines will be imposed on those who refuse to comply. The images of the defiant British people were shared widely on social media and in the British press as a social punishment.

Last week, Johnson closed schools, pubs, restaurants, gyms, cinemas, and theatres. Moreover, the PM also ordered the British people to minimize all in-person interactions. Johnson is optimistic that the U.K will come through stronger after the pandemic has ceased.
