The Suga Cabinet to be launched in today in the afternoon

The 202nd extraordinary Diet session will be convened on the 16th, and the Liberal Democratic Party's governor, Yoshihide Suga (71), will be elected as the 99th prime minister in the afternoon plenary session of both houses of the Diet. Mr. Suga immediately started to form a cabinet, and on the evening of the 16th, the Suga Cabinet will be established by a coalition of the Liberal Democratic Party and the Komeito Party. In the new cabinet, there are many reappointments and the appointment of experienced ministers, and the first entry will be five people, including Shinji Inoue, the former deputy minister of the environment (50), who will be the full-time minister in charge of the Expo.

The Minister in charge of the Expo is a minister based on the Act on Special Measures Concerning the Preparation and Operation of the Expo 2025 in Osaka and Kansai, which was enacted in 2019. The number of ministers will increase by one to 20.

Mr. Suga was elected as the 26th president of the Liberal Democratic Party on the 14th, succeeding Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who was in power for 7 years and 8 months, the longest in history. On the same day, he announced that he would "create a cabinet that works for the people" about the new cabinet. He expressed his intention to take measures against the new coronavirus infection and economic measures, and declared that he would "break down the vertical division of government offices, vested interests, and the principle of following precedents, and proceed with regulatory reform."

After being elected Prime Minister on the afternoon of the 16th, Mr. Suga will hold a party leadership meeting with Komeito representative Natsuo Yamaguchi at the Prime Minister's Office and established the Cabinet Headquarters. A new cabinet will be established after the prime minister appointment ceremony and ministerial certification ceremony at the Imperial Palace.

Mr. Suga will be the first prime minister from Akita prefecture. It is unusual for a prime minister to be elected by the Liberal Democratic Party because it is a "non-faction / non-hereditary" that does not belong to a faction and has a relative of a member of parliament.
