The New Domestic Violence might raise to 31 million cases globally if lockdowns go on for 6 months, WHO said.

During a press briefing on May 7, the World Health Organization (WHO) discusses the rise of the domestic violence cases globally.

Base on the Data from the United Nations Population Fund, Dr. Hans Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe highlighted the rise of domestic violence as the result of stay-at-home orders and lockdowns. He mentioned that the number of women who have experienced domestic violence  from their partner increase by 600%

During coronavirus lockdowns continue, anxiety, stress, and anger continue to run high and those feelings could be bad and life-threatening for those who experience domestic violence.

Dr. Hans Kludge also mentioned that domestic violence will estimated an increase to 31 million cases if coronavirus lockdown continues for six months.

“Violence is preventable, not inevitable” Dr. Hans said.

There are little data exist because only a small portion of cases being reported and known. To help those who dealing with domestic violence behind the doors, He mentioned that the government can provide health services and expand services like hotlines that can support victims of domestic violence and consider these things like moral obligations.

Dr. Hans also encourages the public to check their neighbors, friends, and family.

“Stay in touch.” Contact and support your neighbors, acquaintances, family, and friends,” Kluge said.

WHO mentioned they will release a more detailed memo on how to better support the domestic violence victims in the coming days.
