Thai doctors claim to cure the novel coronavirus

As one of the ASEAN countries affected by the coronavirus, the Thai Ministry of Health on Sunday said that the doctors in Thailand claimed to have treated two coronavirus patients with the combination of antiviral drugs, often used to treat HIV.

A doctor in Rajavithi Hospital in Bangkok, Dr. Kriangsak Atipornwanich, said that he had managed to treat a 71-year-old female patient from China with antiviral and flu drugs. Previously, the female patient was treated with only antiviral drugs.

Atipornwanich said that initially, the patient’s condition was severe. But, the result of the drug combination was very satisfactory. The patient recovered within 48 hours, from being positive with coronavirus to tested negative.

The officials at the press conference said that the lab test result showed no coronavirus in the patient’s respiratory system.

Since being declared a global emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO), the finding has been hailed as a hope to overcome the novel coronavirus. The antiviral drug was used first by the hospitals in Beijing to treat the patient from Wuhan.

Regarding whether they succeed or not, it was unclear. However, the statement from the Thai doctor might have given a new perspective to the treatment.

The Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the U.S National Institutes of Health, Dr. Anthony Fauci, said last week that currently, no effective drugs could treat the coronavirus.
