Terrorism in Sinai, 8 Egyptian Policemen Killed

SINAI - The terrorist was in action on Eid al-Fitr celebration. Eid al-Fitr – a celebration day at the end of Ramadan month - is supposed to be a season of forgiving and kindness, but terrorism has no tolerance at all. We also condemn this act of terrorism.

On the first day of Eid al-Fitr, Wednesday (5/6), a terrorist attack exploded in Sinai, near Gaza border.

According to the report by Egyptian Ministry of Interior, the attack aimed at the west of El-Arish, and it was supposed to be a blitzkrieg. However, the Egyptian police was quick to counteract the attack. Nonetheless, shootout between the terrorists and the police force was inevitable. Reinforcements for the police came to their aid later on.

The shootout took its toll from both sides, although it seems that the police lost more of its members: 5 terrorists were killed in the clash and 8 Egyptian police killed on duty. From the reinforcements, 3 members of Central Security Force were injured by the bullets. They were brought immediately to get medical treatment to the El-Arish hospital.

For several recent years, Egypt has been fighting series of terrorism claimed to be executed by ISIS. In February 2018, Egyptian government activated “Operation Sinai 2018” to secure Sinai Peninsula from terrorism.

In April 2018, 2 suicide bombers exploded at churches in Tanta and Alexandria claiming lives of at least 45 people. Since then, Egypt declared the state of emergency.

In December 2018, a terrorist bombing once again took its toll as it exploded at the roadside nearby Pyramids of Giza hitting a tourist bus, claiming 3 lives: 2 Vietnamese tourists and 1 Egyptian guide, while other passengers are injured by the explosion.

In May 2019, the police fought back by demolishing 16 people accused to be jihadists in North Sinai. However, the terrorist also leveled up their game by blowing a bomb nearby Pyramids of Giza, injuring 17 people, among them were tourists, reenacting December 2018 incident.
