Telkomsel starts the 5G networks trial in Batam

Indonesia slowly begins to embrace 5G networks. One of the biggest Indonesian networks provider, Telkomsel, revealed that they were testing the successor of the 4G networks at Telkomsel Smart Office (TSO) in Batam, Riau Islands. In Batam, Telkomsel tested the 5G networks for video calls and other industrial needs.

Director of Planning & Transformation Telkomsel, Edward Ying, said that the 5G networks trial for industrial needs is a part of Telkomsel’s effort to accelerate the ecosystem’s readiness for the ultra-fast networks.

Eventually, Indonesian industries may rely on the 5G networks to enhance quality, automation, productivity, and efficiency, in line with the vision of the Indonesian government in “Making Indonesia 4.0”.

For video calls, Telkomsel used Chinese gadget, Oppo Reno 10x Zoom 5G edition with 3.5 GHz frequency. Director-General of Resources and Equipment of Post and Information, Ismail, stated that the frequency requires satellite support.

Ismail also added that the test was to see the implication of 3.5 GHz frequency to determine the bandwidth which has to be given by the operator if the frequency seems fit in Indonesia.

The tech experts predicted that later on, the 5G networks have several intelligent, futuristic functions such as aerial patrol, surveillance, more immersive industrial collaboration, smart city planning, more immersive entertainment, a low latency gaming experience, and the pushing force for Industrial Revolution 4.0.
