Tegal Government applies local lockdown: We don't go against the central government

Previously, the Mayor of Tegal, Dedy Yon Supriyono, ordered to block 49 in-road protocol road accesses and inter-village road starting 30 March to 31 July 2020.

Speaking on Friday, the Deputy Mayor of Tegal, Muhammad Jumadi, said that the order does not go against the Indonesian Government’s will. In fact, it aligns with it in order to reduce the outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in the region.

On 21 March, the Head of COVID-19 task force, Doni Monardo, said that the government will not implement any regional or nation-wide lockdown to combat the COVID-19. Furthermore, Doni said that the decision for lockdown lies on the hand of the central government, the President of Indonesia himself, Joko Widodo (Jokowi).

Muhammad said that 49 entrances to Tegal city will be blocked by movable concrete barriers. Two or three of the number will be opened, guarded by police, transportation agency, and COVID-19 taskforce.

When asked what was the meaning of locking down Tegal, Muhammad said that that does not mean Tegal will be a “ghost town”. The mobility of the people is limited, and mass gatherings are restricted temporarily.

Currently, Tegal has entered code red for COVID-19. Tegal government had coordinated with the Bureau of Logistics to provide the city for the next four-month quarantine.
