Tech Talk: Do you need to wait for 5G?

Here is the big question being asked by everyone after the launching of 5G networks. Do we need one? Recently, Samsung released Samsung Note 10 and S10 series with 5G compatibility for some countries. This successor of 4G networks is said to be 100 times faster than its predecessor.

So, knowing its fast speed, is it necessary to have a 5G phone now? The answer is still “No”, and of course, we are going to tell you why.

The 5G networks are not stable yet. It is proven by the fact that there are only a handful of regions that could generate the signal. Modems and antennae in the phone could not work with providers that have not provided 5G networks or regions that have not been covered by the networks yet.

On Friday (20/9), Apple released the iPhone 11 series in Japan. However, 5G capability is not included in its specification. Apple decided to wait for the networks to mature before implementing it into the iPhone’s system.

Many phone makers such as Samsung, Motorola, and Huawei had already made phones with 5G compatibility. However, due to the surge of enthusiasm from the tech lovers, they said that it was getting harder for them to satisfy the market.

In South Korea, Samsung had sold 2 million 5G phones until April and it expects the number to double by the end of 2019. Motorola said the similar, adding that the trend affected people who love to experience the 5G first on the block.

Besides the coverage area, the price is also a big “no”. Samsung's Galaxy S10 phone costs $900, and the 5G model costs $1,300. Despite Samsung’s top-notch specification, we all know that they are all going for the 5G, not for the other specs. Motorola’s Moto Z series is sold at US$350 for 5G! Therefore, Motorola saw a “big enthusiasm” for its 5G phones.

Once more, there are people don’t mind to make it rain just to experience the 5G firsthand. However, the experts questioned the impulsive manner to buy 5G phone as soon as it is on the market, adding that as soon as 5G networks had become an ordinary feature, the initial price would look ridiculous for something so “inconsistent until 2021”.

Experts pointed out that in 2020, 5G phones will be an ordinary thing, compared to its hit in 2019 as the best “introductory year”. Therefore, we suggest that it is better to wait until the connection is stable in one or two more years.
