Taylor Swift Releases New Song Calling for LGBTQ Equality

Pop star and songwriter Taylor Swift is keeping up her fight to urge the Senate to pass the Equality Act bill in her latest music video. Swift dropped the star-studded music video, You Need to Calm Down, on Monday (6/17) which targets the opponents of LGBTQ rights and calls for fans to sign a petition demanding US legal protection for gays, lesbians, and transgender community—a bill that is intended to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation in areas like education, housing, and finances.

Two sentences that support equality for LGBTQ community and a call for signing petition on Change.org platform showed on screen at the end of the video. Within a few hours, the petition had collected more than 222,000 signatures.

Some celebrities who identify as LGBT featured in the video include Adam Lambert, Ellen DeGeneres, Billy Porter, RuPaul, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Hannah Hart, and Tan France. Swift also surprised viewers with the cameo appearance of former rival Katy Perry, whom she spat with back in 2013 over backup singers in their shows. The two musicians were outfitted in fast-food costumes, Swift as French fries hugged Perry dressed as a hamburger—a costume she wore to the Met Gala fundraiser held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in May.

Earlier this month, Taylor Swift also wrote an open letter to reject Trump’s administration that opposed the passage of the Equality Act. The singer has stepped into politics by supporting two Democrats running in US congressional elections in Tennessee since 2018.
