Taro Aso: 2020 Olympics is cursed

Every 40 years, the Olympics always meets a major hindrance before its commencement. In 1940, it was canceled due to the war between Japan and China, and in 1980, it was boycotted. Japan’s Deputy Prime Minister also serving as the Minister of Finance, Taro Aso, said that the 2020 Summer Olympics is also cursed.

The statement came amid the speculation that the Summer Olympics might be either canceled or postponed due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic outbreak that rattled the whole world.

Speaking in a meeting of the Financial Affairs Committee of the House of Councilors on Wednesday, Aso noted that every 40 years, there must be a problem; therefore, he stated that it is a fact to say that the upcoming Summer Olympics is cursed as well.

Indeed, the former Prime Minister is well known for his candor and gaffes. It is not impossible that his remark will stir controversies from athletes and the organizers of the Tokyo Games.

Aso added that it is still an objective of Japan to hold the Summer Olympics peacefully, an event that would “move the people”. However, he noted that it would be a tough decision, especially to host spectators in it amid the global pandemic.

The Olympics is going to start from 24 July to 9 August, and the Paralympics from 25 August to 6 September.

The Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, also put his position and legacy at stake as the longest-serving PM of Japan by hosting the Tokyo Games and hailing an estimated US$2.3 billion to the Japanese tourism and consumer spending. However, as the global pandemic is raging, the doubt is looming large.

Other major sports events have been postponed such as Euro 2020 and the 2020 Copa America.
