Tackling bullying, Instagram makes you reconsider before posting

Instagram should have been a place to share memories and beauties to the world. However, some users are just too ignorant that they verbally abuse other people to an extent leading others to depression. The condition gets worse as other people also join the verbal abuse; hence, it is called “bullying”.

It’s time to stop. Starting on 16 December 2019, the Facebook-owned social media platform introduced a feature that will “nudge” you if you are making an offensive post.

Revealed in a tweet on 17 December by the CEO of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, the feature aims to make the user contemplate and revise their posts. Instagram’s artificial intelligence (AI) automatically does the screening job on the caption, as shown in the URL linked to Instagram's official blog post titled "Our Progress on Leading the Fight Against Online Bullying".

Once the AI detects offensive word(s), Instagram will notify the related user that the wording used in their caption is similar to bullying material once submitted by various users. Then, the user gets the chance to revise the caption before posting the video or photo.

Mosseri’s post hailed various reactions. But, the majority of replies showed that most netizens hailed Instagram’s censorship and initiative to battle bullying.

Not only battling bullying but also Instagram wants users to know what materials considered offensive and a violation of Instagram’s policy. Nonetheless, the feature is available in specific regions. It will go global in months to come.

In early 2019, Instagram released a similar feature, but only limited to posting a comment. Before commenting, Instagram’s AI screens the comment, notifies the user once offensive word(s) is detected, and gives them the chance to revise their comments before posting it.

Instagram said that the result was promising and encouraged people to think twice before posting.
