Sumida River Fireworks Festival to be held for first time in four years
One of Tokyo's most popular summer festivals will make
a comeback in July for the first time in four years, as coronavirus
restrictions are lifted.
The organizers of the Sumida River Fireworks Festival
decided on Tuesday to hold the event on July 29, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The
festival will feature about 20,000 fireworks, the same as four years ago.
The fireworks display is a highly popular summer event
in the Japanese capital, attracting about 950,000 visitors each year. But the
event had been canceled for three years due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The organizers said they decided to hold the event this year as the government will downgrade the legal classification of COVID-19 in May.
