Suga to prioritize COVID-19 as a reason for snap election
The frontrunner, Chief Cabinet Secretary, and a candidate for the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Yoshihide Suga, stated that the containment of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) will be the top priority after the snap election. Favored to be the next leader of the LDP and the next Prime Minister (PM) of Japan, Suga realized that the ravaging economy after COVID-19.
As the incumbent PM, Shinzo Abe, stepped down due to his health condition, Suga is expected to carry on what Abe has left. Speaking on Tuesday to Asahi, Suga stated that the Japanese people need to feel secure coming back to their workplace.
The experts predicted that after the snap election and becoming the PM, Suga will dissolve the Parliament and hold a snap election to strengthen LDP's grip. Suga hinted that snap election could be possible. However, the decision should rely on the condition of the pandemics. The snap election echoes louder after the poll that shows the satisfaction toward Suga and Abe's tenure.
Like a one-man race, Suga competed against former defense minister Shigeru Ishiba and ex-foreign minister Fumio Kishida, having kicked off on Tuesday, and Suga, being the Chief Cabinet Secretary since the beginning of Abe's reign in 2012, already gathered the majority of supports from the LDP.
