Suga's balancing act to revive Japan's economy and contain COVID-19
Yoshihide Suga officially became the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) after the Monday election and is set to be the next Prime Minister (PM) of Japan after an extraordinary session in the Diet on Wednesday. Suga pledged that he would revive Japan's economy and solve the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemics altogether. The 71-year-old politician is also going to reform the cabinet that "works" for the people more. Suga will run the LDP for the remainder of Shinzo Abe's term through September 2021.
Suga's journey to the PM's seat is closer than ever since the LDP is the majority in the House of Representatives, the lower chamber, and rules the House of Councillors with its coalition, Komeito. Regarding the dissolution of the lower house, Suga will not execute his plan after the general election, unless the experts have stated that the COVID-19 has been brought under control.
As the new PM, Suga would carry on what was left from Abe, including the raging East China Sea dispute with China, and monitor the bilateral relations with the United States after the upcoming presidential election in November. Moreover, Suga also has to deal with the postponement of the Summer Olympics and Paralympics to 2021 due to the raging pandemics.
