Statistics: Online gaming rose by 75% during self-quarantine period

While being quarantined at home, there are a lot of things you can do. One of which is playing games. Verizon stated that the number of online gamers during the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic outbreak rose significantly. About 75 percent of online gamers were detected during rush hours.

The increase happened due to the large number of people advised to stay home to suppress the contamination of COVID-19. Therefore, they opted to play games. Without having to announce new games, Steam noted a 20 million users traffic on 16 March 2020. Discord even reported a server overload, due to the users’ log-ins overflowed by more than 20 percent of its capacity last week.

Skycatcher also recorded that the average time spent by a mobile gamer in 2020 rose by 41 percent during the Lunar New Year in January 2020 compared to the same period in 2019. Verizon stated that the increase is expected since many holidays in the U.S are canceled due to the self-quarantine policy.

While gaming and video streaming recorded an increase, social media’s traffic remains flat, showing that people turn to video games as a form of entertainment. While many investments slumped due to COVID-19, video games rise.
