Sony, Docomo withdraw from MWS 2020

As the dangers of the novel coronavirus are looming large, the upcoming major tech trade fair held in Barcelona, the 2020 Mobile World Congress (MWC), saw more and more exhibitors withdrawing from the convention.

The latest was the Japanese electronics manufacturer, Sony, and mobile phone carrier, NTT Docomo. Both companies announced on Monday that they would miss the 2020 MWC, the biggest mobile industry trade fair. The reason for their cancellation is the same: assuring the safety and wellbeing of their customers and employees.

Sony will launch its latest product through its official YouTube channel on 24 February, the first day of the 2020 MWC.

That was from Japan. Meanwhile, one of the world’s biggest e-commerce company in the world, Amazon, revealed before the two that it canceled its participation in the mobile trade fair. Amazon was supposed to showcase Amazon Web Services in the 2020 MWC.

Will that overwhelm the 2020 MWC? Not really, said Barcelona’s deputy mayor, Jaume Collboni. He said that despite their scale, the retreating companies are only a handful compared to the 2,800 partaking companies.

The organizer of the 2020 MWC, GSMA, said that the trade fair will proceed as planned. However, when being asked for comment regarding the withdrawal of these major companies, GSMA declined to give any.

GSMA revealed that it had provided additional guidance to ensure the safety of the 2020 MWC, including banning visitors from Hubei, Central China, the ground zero of the novel coronavirus; if the visitors come from China, they are required to prove their arrival 14 days prior; and, mandatory temperature screening.
