Sleep with mouth plastered? What gives?

Zzzz… Zzzz… Snoring has always been a problem for both the sufferer or those who are suffering from listening to the snoring. There are many factors and many solutions for the noisy sleep disorder. However, recently, there arose a fad to treat it, and it is a bit funny too.

It all started from a post of Indonesian’s famous female Jazz singer, Andien Aisyah. Andien posted through her Instagram Story where she was seen plastering her, her husband, and her 2-year-old son’s, Kawa, mouths with micro tape plaster before going to sleep.

The 34-year-old female singer said that the method got rid of her snoring problem. How? By plastering her mouth, the singer explained that the respiratory system then shifted mainly to the nose. Therefore, the snoring problem was solved!

Nonetheless, don’t get it wrong. Andien is not the pioneer of the movement. The method was made popular by a dentist from California, Mark Burhenne, DDS. The method is called “Buteyko”, derived from the name of its Ukrainian doctor/inventor, Konstantin Buteyko. Buteyko found this sleeping method in the 1950s.

Burhenne explanation aligns with Andien’s that by plastering your mouth before going to sleep, it somehow “forces” your body to breathe through your nose, instead of your mouth. Usually, people breathe through their mouths in their slumber.

Buteyko’s method deals with sleep hyperventilation, where a person is breathing too fast and too deep than necessary. Most people are not aware of doing this in their slumber. Too-Fast breathing causes asthmatic-like shortness of breath. With Buteyko’s method, a person is trained to breathe slower and less deep through their nose.

However, some experts said that the method is way too extreme to train somebody to rely on their nose to breathe during their slumber. The method is not advisable for people suffering from influenza, hay fever, sinusitis, and nasal polyps. Instead of helping, Buteyko’s method could be fatal for people suffering from those disorders. A doctor’s visitation and recommendation are suggested to ensure your fitness and usage of plaster for your program.

Many researchers around the world are still trying to find the correlation between Buteyko’s method and asthma control. In research, Buteyko’s method was proven effective in enhancing memory and sense of smell.

So, would you try it? Some people already tried it and of course, it was not easy at first. Especially, for people who were used to sleep with their mouths open. Nonetheless, it is worth the try, at least to get rid of your snoring problem.
