Shoppers Boycott Home Depot Due to Co-Founder Supports Trump

The Home Depot co-founder, Bernie Marcus, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution recently that he will support the re-election of U.S. President Donal Trump. He said that he wants to give donation for Donald Trump’s 2020 re-election campaign. Marcus also said that although Trump has a bad communication, he made a positive impact on employment. Marcus praised Trump’s aggressive stances toward China and Iran. For Bernie Marcus, Trump produced more than anybody else. His statement received online backlash immediately.

The Home Depot received many boycott calls from shoppers on social media platforms, especially Twitter. The shoppers use #boycotthomedepot hashtag on their tweets. They threaten that Home Depot won’t get any of their home renovation dollars in the future. Shoppers criticized Marcus’ donations to Trump, with some saying they plan to cut up their Home Depot cards. The others say that they will move to competitors like Lowe’s and Menards. One of the shoppers tweeted about her boycott due to the Trump administration's immigration policies and separation of families at the southern border.

Home Depot responded the backlash by making a statement that Marcus had retired from the company more than 15 years ago. Therefore, he isn’t speaking on behalf of the Home Depot. They also said the company does not endorse Presidential candidates. Despite of the statement made by Home Depot, Marcus told the AJC that much of his fortune is rooted in shares of the business. He is worth $5.9 billion, according to Forbes.
