Shipment of notebook PCs in January this year, the highest ever for a January.
The number of laptop computers shipped in Japan in January this year increased 2.6 times compared to the same month last year, the highest in January total. This is due to the government's plan to deploy computers and other devices to elementary and junior high school students in order to create a learning environment that is compatible with the new coronavirus.
According to the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA), the number of laptop computers shipped in Japan in January this year was about 1,277,000 units, 2.6 times more than the same month last year. In addition, the value of shipments increased 1.3 times to approximately 70.6 billion yen.
This is the highest January total since 2008, when statistics were first compiled in their current form.
The main reasons for the increase are the government's plan to deploy computers to all elementary and junior high school students in Japan ahead of schedule in order to create a learning environment that is compatible with the new coronavirus, and strong sales of personal computers for use in telework.
Against the backdrop of the rapid spread of telework, domestic shipments of laptop computers over the past year have reached 8.94 million units, the highest number to date.
On the other hand, industry groups believe that shipments may settle down once the government's deployment of laptops to elementary and junior high school students is completed.
