Two Canadian women, Lauren Tilley (19) and Bailey Chitty (20), who were abducted in Ghana have been rescued by security forces earlier this month along with the arrest of eight people in connection with their kidnapping.

The Ghanaian information minister, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah said that the preliminary investigations show they are fine and are receiving the necessary attention. Oppong-Nkrumah said that the rescue operation began overnight Tuesday and he also denied that the abductors had been paid off and there was no during the operation.

A spokesman for Global Affairs Canada, Guillaume Berube said that the government was relieved that the women had been released. However, there were no further details would be shared in order to protect privacy.

Ghana has been considered as one of the least dangerous countries in West Africa, but the abductions of the women has marked the second time in a month that foreigners had been targeted in Kumasi.
