Security forces in Venezuela succeeded in thwarting the coup attempt

Venezuelan President, Nicolas Maduro stated that the coup against him was successfully foiled. Reported from the AFP, Thursday (27/6), Maduro stated that Venezuelan security forces had managed to uncover, dismantle and arrest a group of fascist terrorists who planned a coup against the Venezuelan government.

Maduro said that he had spies who managed to infiltrate the movement. As a result, there were six people arrested in connection with the coup attempt. Venezuela's Minister of Communication, Jorge Rodriguez, said that those involved in the coup attempt were a number of active and retired military officers. The coup attempt was planned to kill Maduro and then replace it with the former defense minister, Raul Baduel, one of ministers in Hugo Chavez cabinet.

According to one of the detained military officers, Lieutenant Carlos Saveedra, the coup attempt targeted three military bases, including the La Carlota Airport in the capital city of Caracas. The coup also plot to involved an attack on the headquarters of intelligence agency Sebin to free General Raul Baduel, the former defense minister who was arrested on charges of corruption in 2009.

Maduro claimed that the mastermind of this coup was Colombian President Ivan Duque, Chilean President Sebastian Pinera, US President John Bolton's Security Advisor, and Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido. But Guaido denied the accusation and called it a lie.

Previously, Venezuelan authorities stated that 17 people had been charged with conducting an attempted coup on April 30. At that time Guaido called on the Venezuelan armed forces to rise up against Maduro, but failed to call for an uprising.
Since chaotic caused by crisis in Venezuela, Guaido has claimed to be the interim president of Venezuela. His claim was recognized by several countries, including United States.
