Save the date! Trump and Kim to meet at the end of 2019

Hope for both countries, a meeting between the leaders from the U.S and North Korea (N. Korea) could happen around 2019. Asked by journalists at the White House about the meeting with the Supreme Leader of N. Korea, Kim Jong-un, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated that it would happen.

“At some point, we want to meet. The meeting will happen with him (Kim) could happen,” stated Trump to the journalists on Thursday (12/9).

The talks for denuclearization for the peace of the Korean Peninsula sparked once more after Trump dismissed John Bolton on Tuesday (10/9) from his post as White House National Security Advisor.

Bolton was known to state strident criticism regarding N. Korea’s nuclear issues. For Trump, Bolton’s slur comparing Kim to Muammar Gaddafi of Libya was the final shot. It is expected that the dismissal of John Bolton could smooth the talk between the two leaders.

“We (Trump and Bolton) got along very well. He made a huge mistake when comparing Kim to the Libyan model,” Trump added, “it is not a good comment to make.”

Moreover, the spark grew brighter after a statement on Monday (9/9) by N. Korean Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Choi Son Hui, that Pyongyang was willing to hold another constructive talk with Washington in late September. However, the statement also came with a warning that if no constructive solution was made, then denuclearization might as well come to an end.

The State Department Spokesperson, Morgan Ortagus, admired the spirit from both countries to continue the stalled denuclearization talk as a mutual goal between the U.S and N. Korea. However, Ortagus stated that no meeting was in the cards for now.

"We welcome the statement. But, there is no meeting related to that yet. However, it is still our goal for N. Korea to be denuclearized," stated Ortagus.

In other news, President of South Korea (S. Korea), Moon Jae-in, is set to meet Trump in the 74th United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York, according to a statement by Ko Min-jung, Moon’s spokesperson.

Moon is going for a four-day state visit to the U.S to attend the General Assembly and on the sidelines of the assembly, a meeting is being arranged. The urge for a meeting came after N. Korea’s positive statement to the talks.

For our record, Trump and Kim had met once in 2018 in Singapore and twice in 2019. In 2018, Kim Jong-un vowed to denuclearize his country for the sake of world peace.

The talk met ups and downs as it broke down in February’s Hanoi Summit, and it was up again after Trump and Kim met at the Demilitarized Zone. However, the condition once worsened as the Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, referred to N. Korea’s behavior as “rogue” which caused N. Korean Choe Son Hui to drop the warning for the U.S to not test Pyongyang’s patience.

As the possibility for Trump and Kim to meet emerges once more, should they meet for real, it would be their fourth meeting.
