Saudi, Houthi envoys meet in Yemen for peace talks

A Saudi Arabian delegation has held talks with Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen's capital in an effort to end eight years of civil war in Yemen.

Houthi-run media reported that the Saudi delegation met senior members of the Houthi group in Sanaa on Sunday.

The Saudi government has not issued any comment on the talks.

Yemen has been torn by conflict since 2015, causing what has been called the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

The fighting is seen as a proxy war between Saudi Arabia and Iran, which support the Yemeni government and Houthi rebels, respectively.

Saudi Arabia and Iran struck a deal in March to normalize diplomatic ties for the first time in seven years.

China mediated the agreement. Both sides are now working to reopen their embassies.

Attention is focused on whether any progress will be made in efforts to end the civil war.
