S. Korean comfort women survivor to seek U.N intervention

On Tuesday, one of the S. Korean women who was once sexually enslaved as a "comfort woman" during the Japanese occupation over the Korean Peninsula in the World War II-era called for both countries to settle the matter by seeking an intervention from the International Court of Justice.

Referring the message to the President of the S. Korea, Moon Jae-in, Lee Yong-soo (92) wanted the United Nation's highest court to bring an impasse after she and the other comfort women survivors have not succeeded after having been campaigning for 30 years. The demand is that the Japanese Government will take the responsibility for their sexual slavery.

Moreover, she also stated that the conflict between the two governments only hurt the relations between the S. Korean Government and its young generations. Lee stated that the youngsters are not properly educated about wartime history.

While Moon's office gave no immediate reaction to Lee's demand, the spokesperson of the S. Korean Foreign Ministry, Choi Young-sam, stated that the S. Korean Government will scrutinize Lee's proposal. Besides, the Government will take opinions from other comfort women survivors. It is uncertain whether S. Korean Government will take the matter to the U.N's highest court.

Lee stated that it is no longer possible to solve the comfort women issue between Japan and S. Korea through diplomatic talks. It is known that the decision of the S. Korean domestic courts keeps on being rejected by the Japanese Government.

Mentioning the Prime Minister of Japan, Yoshihide Suga, Lee asked Suga to bring the matter to the international court to settle the matter for good. Therefore, Lee also wanted the relations between the Japanese and S. Korean people to normalize again.
